Benefits of the Carbotech ceramic - Kevlar based brake pad
-
Much lower dusting than comparable carbon-metallic pads. What dust they do make is very light colored and not as destructive to your wheel's finish.
-
The frequency that the ceramic material vibrates at is beyond the range of human hearing so you will notice relatively lower noise with even the most aggressive Carbotech race compounds.
-
The slight compressibilty of the Kevlar material gives Carbotech's their legendary modulation and release characteristics. No on/off switch!
-
Using Kevlar instead of steel strings makes a stronger pad, able to withstand greater abuse
-
Ceramic gives the flat torque curve these pads are known for. Note the very small difference between cold and hot friction levels in the chart
-
Ceramic gives equal friction to a carbon iron based pad but much less rotor wear. Carbon and iron when heated creates carbide, what cutting tools are made of!
Choosing the right compound
The 1521 compound is direct OE replacement pad yet offers better bite and a higher maximum operating temperature.
The S2000 likes a higher friction pad in front, for example : XP10 front, XP8 rear or XP12 front with XP10 rear. If using the OE replacement 1521 or autocross oriented AX6, use the same front and rear.
You ideally want your fronts to lock just before your rears on smooth pavement in a straight line. The AX6 can be used for the track but with beginner level drivers on street tires. If you are running UHP tires such as Star Spec, RE11, R1R, XP10/XP8. For UHP or race tires and advanced or instructor level driver, XP12/XP10.

READ THIS!
Carbotech brakes require their own, uncontaminated transfer layer made by Carbotech pads. If this is not done, you will not experience the full potential of the ceramic-kevlar compound.
You will need to do one of the following:
- Resurface your old rotors
- Completely remove the old transfer layer with a steel wire brush/flapper disc on a drill/grinder
- New rotors
